Invasive insects-such as the hemlock woolly adelgid and the emerald ash borer-are changing the tree canopy, and thereby altering food chains, increasing water temperatures due to loss of shade, and reshaping the natural and built landscape. Yet forces are again working against our trees. Penn’s Woods have had a history of destruction and recovery-from the timbering in the late 1800s to tree plantings through the efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps to the slow rebirth of our tree canopy. Pennsylvania is the only state named for trees: Penn’s Woods … Penn’s Sylvania With your help, our beautiful state CAN restore its magnificent trees. But the need for trees doesn’t end and neither will your opportunity to make a difference. We dubbed 2020 (in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Earth Day), The Year of the Trees.
